In Time: I Won’t Back Down

It’s been a while since I visited Viola and my In Time series which first appeared on My Write Side. You can find more by click the WIP tab above or searching for “In Time.”

Viola stood with her feet shoulder width apart on the ground. Her arms extended forward from her body and the fingers of both hands curled around a pistol. Her tear smudged face was the only indicator of her fear as Father Lee stood before her, weaponless. She’d stripped him of his own pistol, which she’d now pointed at his heart.

“If you kill me, you will never save him,” Father Lee pleaded.

“I’ll drag you back from the pits of hell.” Venom dripped from her tongue.

“Roderick will destroy you.”

“Wicked words from a dying man. I won’t back down.”

I’m linking this up with Lance and Leeroy for the 100 Word Song challenge. This week’s song was one of my favorites, from Tom Petty: “I Won’t Back Down.” Since Viola is also in survival mode here, I’m linking this up with Velvet Verbosity, too, since it meets her 100 Word Challenge requirement. The prompt there this week was “Surviving”.

I welcome and appreciate honest feedback. Please share your thoughts in a comment.

The Good Son

Her tears fell, single, soundless, on the stone beneath her knees, weeping for her son. “A few good men” flickered in her mind. He was good, one of the few. He enlisted early, at seventeen. “The proud, the few, the Marines.” He was all of that and more. He didn’t even graduate before they called his number. He stood astute, his arm raised, his hand positioned in perfect salute, dressed in his blues. A visit home before deployment and a return in a simple pine box, days before his eighteenth birthday. Her tears fell for a life snuffed too soon.

Today’s flash fiction is brought to you by Lance/Leeroy’s 100 Word Song (David Bowie’s Soul Love) and Velvet Verbosity’s 100 Word Challenge (Soundless).

I welcome and appreciate all honest feedback. Please share your thoughts in a comment.

Beyond the Flames

He couldn’t see beyond the flames, only knew that they were safe. Adam moved towards the center of the room, distancing himself from the fire that surrounded him on every side. He remained calm, not allowing himself to become rattled by his circumstances, understanding the beauty behind the blaze. The red-yellow glow captivated his eyes as his mind awed the cleansing it would give. There would be no more sacrifice here, only rebirth. No more would the voices scream their demands for blood shed or heart break.

He couldn’t see beyond the flames, only knew the end was finally coming.

For the Scriptic prompt exchange this week, femmefauxpas gave me this prompt: He couldn’t see beyond the flames…

I gave Diane this prompt: Things are not what they seem.

This post also links up to 3 Word Wednesday with their offering of “calm, know, and rattle”, as well as Velvet Verbosity’s 100 W0rd Challenge. This week’s challenge was “distancing”.

Don’t forget to stop by my America’s Next Author page and VOTE VOTE VOTE. There’s a link to read my story, and rate it. I’d love to hear your thoughts over there too, so please leave me a comment “review”. Please pass it on so your friends can vote, too!

Falling to Pieces

He stands there, stoic and bold.

Naked, he shivers in the cold.

Slowly he buds, now dressed in green.

His beauty now he does preen.

The wind with her whispers that flow right through

Entrance him with the kiss of a lover true.

All summer long with the sun he plays

Shaking his leaves, catching her rays.

Ere too long, the wind finds out

And whips his cheating heart about.

One by one, his leaves they fall

In a burst of flaming color, his vintage call.

They fall to earth like puzzle pieces

His love, his life, his beauty ceases.

This week’s 100 Word Song was chosen by moi. My long time love affair with Faith No More’s talented lead singer, Mike Patton, led me to chose the creative “Falling to Pieces.” This is my take on it.

I’m not a poet, though I write it occasionally. I’d still love to get your feedback. Please share your thoughts in a comment before you leave.

In Time: Faded

Cage opened his eyes. His flesh ached. Bandages covered his body. The light hurt his eyes so he closed them, and then opened them slowly. Two people hovered nearby in white jackets. He stared, his mouth working as if it had forgotten how to talk.

“Who-who-who?” he stammered, his tongue feeling thick and foreign in his mouth.

“We are scientists, and you are very lucky to be alive,” one of the white jackets answered. Cage shook his head once. He lifted his finger and pointed to himself, his eyebrow arched in question.

“Your memory is gone. You have been reinvented.”

This week’s 100 song challenge was Ben Harper’s Faded. The challenge is to write a post in response to the song prompt in 100 words exactly. This is my response.
