My Write Side

Come Around

“Look! It’s raining people!” Elizabeth shouted. Jory came running to the window.

“That’s just water.” She turned away disappointed.

“Sigh. Maybe it’s time. Let’s take a ride.”

Jory grabbed the urn and followed her mother to the car. The drive to the beach was silent.

Elisabeth tousled Jory’s hair. “Come on, kiddo. Let’s do what we should have done weeks ago.”

Jory carried the urn to the end of the pier. A few tears escaped as she tipped it down into the wind. Elisabeth pulled her close.

“See that? All those pieces of Dad now floating free. He’ll come around.”

  1. Oh. Wow. Oh.

So now I tell you about the ashes of my dad (My mom split them among us as a family to do what we wanted with them) and so he has been to VA Beach, Florida, on a cruise, Aruba and the Jersey Shore.
(He loved the beach, he loved to be warm, he loved traveling…I like to think that he is still doing all of that.)

so reading this, knowing that, knowing that my dad is floating in the air all the time, that when I stand on a shoreline that chances are that he near me somehow, made me smile and tear up and remember.

I truly loved this, the wording, the way you used the song to bring my own memories “BACK AROUND” just made me smile.

your talent with words is just enviable.

    • And my work is done. Thank you so much, Kir, for sharing your story and how my writing took you there. There is no greater compliment than that. XOXO

  2. I just don’t get that first line. Why would she say it’s raining people? And Elizabeth is the adult, right? I would have thought that would be something a child would say.

Ack, help me, I feel dense :p

  3. I loved where you took this. LOVED.
