“What are you doing?” Sylvia asked her mother, who was dancing around the kitchen chanting. She held jars of spices in her hand and more jars, these empty, were scattered across the counter.
“Mrs. Henderson wants a second child- a girl this time.” Her mother answered, adding more spices to the mound in front of her. Another dash of cinnamon and she stepped back, offering a tiny spoonful to Sylvia. “What do you think?”
Sylvia swooped in, savored. “Just a tad spicy,” she said.
Her mother smiled wickedly. “Good. That’s what that home wrecker deserves.”

Hmmm…home wrecker? So Mrs. Henderson had an affair with Sylvia’s mother? Interesting way to get the gender you require

Did you mean father? I think I really like this story. Maybe it will develop into more. Its not apparent that she is concocting a baby with the spices and chants?

yes, I meant father. :p And I got that the spices were helping her with conception in general and with creating the temperament of the future child
